University of Kansas Medical Center Traditions
The main campus of the University of Kansas is located in Lawrence, Kansas, where there are about 26,000 students. The School of Health Professions, the School of Medicine, and the School of Nursing are housed at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, about 40 minutes west of the Lawrence campus. The online master's degree in dietetics and nutrition is offered through the School of Health Professions.
For over 100 years University of Kansas fans have been shouting the Rock Chalk Chant. Chemistry professor E.H.S. Bailey in 1886 came up with the chant for the Science Club. It started out as “Rah, Rah, Jay Hawk, K.U.” repeated three times. Someone else suggested Rock Chalk to rhyme with Jayhawk and to reference the chalky limestone formation found on the college property. By 1889 the cheer had changed to “Rock-Chalk-Jay-Hawk, K-U-U-U” said long and drawn out twice, then followed by three staccato repetitions.
